Manuel Azpurua has been in the horse industry for more than 22 years. He started as a young trainer when he was just 20 years old. Calder and Hialeah where the first racetracks where under his father’s guidance, he became a trainer.
After a short but successful career in Florida, he returned to the racetrack in Valencia, Venezuela. The first year he received the award of “Leadeing Trainer” and in the following years, he was ranked among the top 5 trainers. He trained in Valencia for 4 years, from 1983 to 1986.
He moved up the ladder by moving to Caracas to the most prominent racetrack in Venezuela “La Rinconada”. For more than 14 years he trained and remained in the list of the best trainers of the time. He wins more than 800 races including at least 20 stakes and 16 graded. In 1991 and 1992, his horses were First and Second place respectively at “El Clásico del Caribe” in Puerto Rico, one of the most significant horse races in Latin America. He also was the first place in the classic “Confraternidad del Caribe” in Maracaibo, Venezuela in 1997.
In 2002, he finally decided to join the rest of the family in Florida, when he was offered a position as training manager in one of the most renowned horse operations in Ocala and Eclipse Award Winner, Frank Farms. At Franks, he broke more than 100 yearlings per year and many stake winners.
After Frank Farms closed its operations, he decided to partner with his brother where he oversees the breaking and training operations in Azpurua Stables since 2004.
